Now, I’m probably bias being born and bred here, but Cambridge, UK truly is one of the best cities on the planet! Cambridge is famous for its university, currently one of the best in the world, and its scientists. It is the town where: where the structure of DNA was discovered, where Charles Darwin developed the theory of evolution, where Newton developed his theory of gravity, where the order of human DNA was first discovered, where the electron and neutron were discovered, where Stephen Hawking of black-hole fame still lives and works. It has been home to some of the great thinkers of the last 500 years!

Cambridge is famous for the river Cam – take a punt along the ‘Backs’ with the gorgeous views of the colleges and grounds in your own private punt. Unless you’re skilled in the art of punting – get one of the boating companies to do it for you. It’s much harder than it looks – plus you don’t want those naughty college students to pinch your pole as you go under a bridge (a common prank known by the locals) or get stuck by ‘Dead Man’s Curve’!
The bridge of Sighs, Mathematical Bridge, Trinity Bridge, Kings College Bridge, Clare College Bridge to name but a few!
A chic come classic boutique hotel in a central location. Perfect for a luxury spa, something to get your teeth into at the Steakhouse restaurant or take stock of the wonderful high views in the Rooftop Gardens with a quintessentially British Pimms or Afternoon Tea. The Varsity Hotel and Spa
The Corpus Clock is one of the newest and most distinctive public monuments in Cambridge. It is a unique and strange device for the measurement of time and is both hypnotically beautiful and intriguing. It was invented, designed and given to Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, by Dr John C Taylor. The Clock is a remarkable mixture of very modern design and an ancient setting; of precision engineering and engaging whimsy; of utterly traditional clockwork (quite literally) and unexpected electronic invention; of vast size and extreme delicacy of movement; of unceasing life and imminent death; and it tells the time with absolute exactness and breath-taking unpredictability.
In the University of Cambridge. Considered one of the finest examples of late Perpendicular architecture. The building work started in 1446 and took over a century to build. It houses the largest fan ceiling in the world and some of the most beautiful medieval stained glass. It is also the venue for the Christmas Eve service, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, which is broadcast to millions of viewers around the world.
Widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in Cambridge, established for over 30 years. It is privately owned by Armando and Sharon Tommaso. The restaurant is located in a quiet district near Jesus Green and is a secret jealously guarded by the locals. The comfortable but elegant Victorian dining room offers a menu based on fresh market produce and offers it’s guests a truly unique dining experience which is intimate, personal, individual and special. A Victorian villa built beside the banks of the River Cam and on Midsummer Common in the historic University City of Cambridge. It resides on common land which still operates grazing land laws all year so you will often see cows grazing off the land and coming up to the front door to say hello! The restaurant was awarded its first Michelin Star in 2002, followed by the second in 2005. A real treat for French inspired gourmet dining, but absolutely necessary to book. Expect to wait about 4 months to get a table! Midsummer House Website
It’s not ALL about spending money! Stroll along the beautiful Backs, admiring King’s College as you go, then turn into Silver Street, through the city centre and wander as your fancy takes you. In the summer, it’s lovely to take a walk through Grantchester and see all the weeping willow trees, away from the hustle and bustle of the shops for a peaceful stroll.
Market Square is the central focus point of the city and a great place to keep in mind as you explore the cobbled shopping streets of Rose Crescent, Trinity Street, Sidney Street and Green Street. There’s an array of lovely boutiques to browse, and the market itself sells everything from food to arts and crafts, and souvenirs. check market times at VisitCambridge.org
The National Trust properties have sprawling grounds to explore: Wimpole House and Anglesey Abbey to name just two. Take a picnic, and some fizz.. All on the outskirts of the city.
An intimate cocktail lounge with secluded, curtained booths and a sunken garden. Plus table service makes it so much more special. An eclectic choice of live music every week. Hidden Rooms Restaurant
Much like standing in the very middle of the Oxford Circus crossing feels like you’re at the epicentre of London, standing next to Reality Checkpoint, the largest cast iron lamppost on Parker’s Piece invokes a similar sense of satisfaction.
It is just a street full of terraced houses on either side. But, it can feel very Charles Dickinsy, especially in winter, as the nights are drawing in. It’s a pretty little place to walk down. Try walking along here in a snow and not uttering the words “Christmas”, “card” “looks” and “like”. Impossible!
All Saints’ Church’s on Jesus Lane has a breath-taking interior which is a triumph of Victorian art and design. Light gleams through stained-glass windows, designed by leading Arts and Crafts artists, including William Morris, Edward Burne-Jones and Ford Madox. All Saints Church Website
I’m Jemma, I own Cambridgeshire’s only localised Wedding Directory www.simplifymyday.co.uk. Simplify My Day was created last year to help couples plan and prepare for their perfect wedding day in Cambridgeshire. We specialise in listing only local venues and services, to make the planning as fun and as easy as possible.
I discovered my passion for everything wedding, when my husband and I were organising our own wedding, 8 years ago now. The huge choice of all wedding related things filled me with joy and how the sky really is the limit with what you can do. There are no rules and every single wedding is unique to that couple. We chose to get married in the conservatory of a working farm venue, with pigs and peacocks free to roam in the grounds. There were Romany caravans for people to stay in and we had fairy lights glow in the long driveway up to the house for a whimsical enchanted evening. After dinner in the barn, the sun went down and clouds filled the night sky making it look all stormy, these were the results of some excellent photography work. It was brilliant, we thoroughly enjoyed it and I could literally talk on the subject of weddings for hours and hours!
I hope you enjoy researching these places and with you and your future wife/husband all the best!
